Transforming Decommissioned Panels into New Opportunities

What if yesterday's solar panels—once destined for landfills—could power tomorrow's underserved communities? This isn't just a possibility; it's an urgent opportunity. Solar energy is driving the global shift to clean electricity, but as installations continue to grow, so does the challenge of managing decommissioned panels.

The Growing Challenge of Solar Waste

By 2035, Australia's cumulative solar panel waste is projected to reach 1 million tonnes. In 2025, around 1.4 million solar PV modules will reach their end-of-life across Australia, with annual waste volume expected to reach around 145,000 tonnes—equivalent to 1.2GW per year—by 2030. The remarkable news? Up to 95% of these panels can be recycled, with valuable materials like silicon, aluminium, and silver waiting to be recovered. Moreover, more than 80% of the decommissioned solar panels by 2030 are projected to come from small-scale distributed PV systems.

Current Recycling Landscape

As of 2025, Australia's recycling capabilities have significantly improved. The national stewardship scheme, now in effect, mandates recycling or reusing panels locally. Several Australian states, including Victoria, South Australia, and New South Wales, have banned solar panel disposal in landfills, with Western Australia following suit in 2024. The total value of recoverable materials from end-of-life solar panels is projected to exceed AU$1 billion by 2035—representing both an environmental challenge and an economic opportunity.

The Australian Centre of Advanced Photovoltaics has established large waste facilities in five major Australian cities, managing over 70% of Australia's solar panel waste. Additionally, the Solar Panel Stewardship program, launched by the Miles Labor Government in Queensland, is now operational with six collection sites across the state and plans for a total of 15 locations.


Breathing New Life into Old Panels

Emerging technologies and innovative recycling approaches are transforming how we view solar panel waste. Advanced techniques now enable:

  • Precision material extraction through electrostatic separation and thermochemical recycling.
  • Panel refurbishment and repurposing—giving panels a second life in areas where even reduced capacity can have a significant impact.
  • Efficient recycling processes that minimise environmental impact, such as biological recycling methods.

As of 2025, some companies, like ElecSome, are now able to recycle up to 100% of a panel's weight, primarily comprising aluminium, copper, and glass. The recycling process often involves fees, which can vary based on location and panel type. Notably, the Smart Energy Council, in partnership with the Queensland Government, has launched Australia's first solar panel recycling pilot program, further advancing the country's recycling capabilities.
